A Grand Display of Military Power: Russia’s Victory Day Parade in a Time of Conflict

As the world watches, Moscow prepares for a significant Victory Day celebration this Friday, marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany. The event will be presided over by President Vladimir V. Putin and is expected to feature military parades with thousands of troops, armored vehicles, and flyovers by fighter jets. This year's festivities gain additional weight as they unfold in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine, raising questions about their significance.

More than 20 foreign leaders, including notable figures from China and Brazil, will join Putin in front of Lenin's mausoleum, underlining Russia's efforts to position itself as a leader among nations of the so-called "global south." The participation of these leaders is a calculated move by the Kremlin to demonstrate international support—or defiance—against Western nations.

The parade is set to be the largest since the launch of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, shining a light on Russia's military capabilities amidst faltering peace negotiations. In a bid to quell tensions, President Putin announced a three-day unilateral ceasefire, commencing on May 8, which Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed as insincere, referring to it as a “theatrical show.” Zelensky’s call for a meaningful 30-day truce was met with skepticism, reflecting the deepening divide between the two nations.
