South African Politician Dismissed Following Visit to Controversial Pastor
Floyd Shivambu, the secretary-general of the uMkhonto weSizwe party, has been sacked for attending a church service led by a fugitive preacher from Malawi.
In a significant political shake-up, Floyd Shivambu, the recently appointed secretary-general of South Africa's uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, has been removed from his position following his attendance at a church service led by the Malawian preacher Shepherd Bushiri in April. Bushiri, known for his controversial status, fled to Malawi after being charged with fraud in 2020 while in South Africa.
The decision to revoke Shivambu's title comes after party officials determined that his actions contradicted the values and principles outlined in the MK party’s constitution. During a press conference, MK official Nathi Nhleko emphasized that the visit was not sanctioned by the organization, prompting the leadership to act decisively.
Despite being removed from the top post, Shivambu remains an active member of the MK party and will transition to represent the party in the National Assembly. He expressed acceptance of the party's decision, stating he is eager to embrace his new role.
Shivambu previously joined the MK party in August 2022 after leaving the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and quickly rose to an influential position. The MK party, established by former President Jacob Zuma, gained prominence in the last election, contributing to the governing ANC losing its long-held majority for the first time since the end of apartheid.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions within South African politics, particularly concerning the remnants of Zuma's influence and the controversies surrounding figures like Bushiri.
