Premier David Crisafulli has underscored the challenges facing residents, even as improving weather conditions provide some respite from the calamity. In an update, thousands who evacuated are expected to return on Tuesday, although many homes and businesses are feared to have experienced significant inundation.
Crisafulli remarked to the ABC that this disaster will "test the resolve of people," as some areas have been deluged with nearly 2 meters (6.5 feet) of rain since Saturday. Despite ongoing flood alerts and blackouts, the recent weather has been "really kind" to towns like Townsville, where locals awoke to minimal rainfall and were relieved that previously predicted flooding levels did not materialize. The easing conditions led the premier to suggest that several suburbs in Townsville may have narrowly averted disaster.
However, the situation remains dire further north, where communication breakdowns and damaged transportation infrastructure hinder the assessment of the flooding's full impact in Ingham and Cardwell. Crisafulli, a native of Ingham, expressed his astonishment upon seeing footage of flooding in high ground businesses—areas he never imagined would be affected by water.
With more than 8,000 properties currently without power, the aftermath of the floods poses substantial challenges for recovery efforts, especially due to the partial collapse of a crucial highway that obstructs relief operations. As Crisafulli acknowledged, the road to recovery will be protracted but essential for the resilience of affected communities.
