Britain and Iran have intensified diplomatic tensions by summoning each other’s envoys amid serious espionage allegations. Three Iranian nationals have been formally charged in the UK for allegedly spying on behalf of the Iranian government. The arrests, which took place on May 3, sparked reactions from both nations with Iran characterizing the charges as "unjustified" and "politically motivated," according to reports from the IRNA news agency.
In response, the British Foreign Office requested an explanation from the Iranian charge d'affaires, asserting that national security is of paramount importance and that Iran must be accountable for its actions. The Foreign Office confirmed that the three arrested individuals—identified as Mostafa Sepahvand, 39, Farhad Javadi Manesh, 44, and Shapoor Qalehali Khani Noori, 55—were accused of engaging in activities likely to assist a foreign intelligence service, spanning from August 2024 to February 2025.
The Metropolitan Police’s investigation revealed that these men, all residents in London, had arrived in the UK over the past years and were granted temporary asylum. They allegedly conducted surveillance operations targeting journalists from Iran International, a media outlet critical of the Iranian regime, which has been classified as a terrorist organization by Tehran.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized the necessity of strict actions against state-sponsored threats, stating, "Iran must be held to account for its actions." This incident comes along with the arrest of five other Iranian men across various cities in the UK on the same day as part of a separate counter-terrorism operation, reflecting the increasing security challenges posed by foreign threats on British soil. The situation remains fluid, with British authorities continuing to investigate possible links and further threats.
