In his speech, Mayor Matsui criticized the deteriorating state of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and urged the Japanese government to endorse the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, effective since 2021 but opposed by major nuclear powers including the US and Russia. Naito echoed these sentiments, speaking out against ongoing bloodshed in conflicts such as those in Gaza and Ukraine, recalling the trauma it evokes from his own past.
“With the world still teetering near nuclear disaster, it is imperative that we amplify our voices against this existential threat,” Naito declared. As protests for nuclear disarmament took place in the streets nearby, the ongoing debate illustrates the complexities surrounding nuclear policy in Japan, a nation historically committed to pacifism yet aligned with American nuclear defense strategies.
