Johnnie Moore, the head of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), has made a bold defense of the organization amidst growing scrutiny and tragic civilian casualties connected to aid distribution efforts in Gaza. Speaking to the BBC World Service's Newshour, Moore acknowledged the harmful incidents occurring near GHF sites but vehemently contested claims that all casualties stem from GHF's operations, labeling such assertions as unfounded.

The recent surge in deaths of Palestinians—over 500 according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry—occurs as desperate citizens attempt to access needed aid. Many deaths were reported shortly after GHF began its operations in late May, prompting severe backlash from UN agencies. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the conditions as “inherently unsafe,” emphasizing that access to essential food should not come with life-threatening risks.

The situation escalated when reports emerged from eyewitnesses describing Israeli forces opening fire on crowds near GHF's aid distribution points, which are located within Israeli military zones. These allegations were compounded by claims from unnamed Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers that there had been orders to shoot at unarmed civilians to disperse gathering crowds. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected these allegations as "malicious falsehoods," while the IDF indicated that their fire had only been directed at individuals perceived as threats.

Moore contended that attributing all casualties to the IDF is inaccurate and stated that his organization has been unable to verify claims of civilians being killed near their sites. He posited that misinformation is being spread by various parties, including the UN, which he accused of dishonesty regarding the safety of aid distributions.

Despite the dire situation, the GHF strives to provide 50 million meals for Gaza, a figure that represents a scarcity of aid given the ongoing blockade and harsh conditions. The GHF recently received a $30 million funding commitment from the US State Department, marking the initial direct support for their efforts.
