North Korea Launches Wonsan Beach Resort Amidst Tourism Revival Efforts

North Korea aims to enhance its tourism sector with the launch of a new beach resort on the east coast, as reported by state media.

In a significant move towards revitalizing its tourism industry, North Korea has announced the opening of the Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Zone, set to welcome domestic visitors starting July 1. This development comes six years after its initial completion date and follows the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. Aiming to attract more tourists and bolster its economy, which has been severely impacted by international sanctions, the resort reportedly spans a 4 km beachfront area and features various amenities such as hotels, dining establishments, shopping centers, and a water park.

Kim Jong Un has been investing in transforming Wonsan, a city with historical significance for him, as it was known for its luxurious villas belonging to the elite of North Korea. While local tourism is a step forward, the resort's ability to attract foreign visitors remains uncertain. Experts suggest that foreign tourist interest may wane, as the area offers less appeal compared to iconic sites in Pyongyang and traditional landmarks. Despite this skepticism, the resort is perceived as a step toward a more open tourism strategy, especially as North Korea attempts to engage tourists from neighboring countries like China and Russia.

As the world watches North Korea's tourism outlook, the opening of the Wonsan Kalma resort is emblematic of the regime's ongoing efforts to navigate economic challenges while trying to present a more welcoming facade to international audiences.

The state media heralded the resort’s opening as a pivotal milestone for the nation and emphasized its importance in signaling a shift in the country's tourism landscape post-pandemic.
