Ukraine Retains Control in Kursk Despite Russian Assaults

Despite ongoing assaults from Russian forces, Ukraine's military commander asserts that troops maintain control over a small section of Kursk, signifying a prolonged struggle in the region.

Ukraine’s military remains entrenched within a portion of Russia’s Kursk region, a staggering development stemming from its surprising incursion last year. Commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrsky reported that, nearly a year after capturing over 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles) of Russian territory in August 2024, Ukrainian forces continue to hold around 90 square kilometers (56 square miles) in the area.

In the face of significant pressure, with approximately 10,000 Russian troops attempting to reclaim the ground, Syrsky emphasized Ukraine's commitment to intensifying military operations against Russia. "Of course, we will continue," he asserted, clarifying that Ukrainian forces are targeting only military assets, not civilian areas.

The incursion, which commenced on August 6, 2024, enabled Ukraine to capture multiple villages within Kursk. The strategic maneuver aimed to establish a buffer zone, countering Russian deployments in vital frontline areas of eastern Ukraine. However, Ukrainian advancements soon faced setbacks as Russia responded by mobilizing reinforcements, including troops from its ally, North Korea.

In recent months, Ukrainian forces have faced intense resistance, battling 70,000 Russian troops bolstered by relentless drone attacks. The influx of North Korean troops, estimated at around 11,000, has further complicated Ukraine's efforts in the region. Reports indicate that at least 1,000 North Korean soldiers have been killed over just three months as part of Russia’s stiff defense strategies.

Amidst the challenges of warfare, Pyongyang has pledged additional assistance, sending mine-clearing units and infrastructure workers to Kursk to address damage caused by the conflict. As the situation evolves, the struggle over Kursk remains a key focal point in the broader war in Ukraine.
