UK to Host Women's World Cup 2035 as Sole Bidder
FIFA president announces UK's bid for the upcoming Women's World Cup is the only valid submission.
The United Kingdom has been confirmed as the host for the 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cup, following an announcement by FIFA president Gianni Infantino stating that it is the only "valid" bid received for the tournament. The home nations, including England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, collaborated to submit an expression of interest in March for the global event to be held across their territories. As per FIFA’s rotation policy, the tournament must take place in either Europe or Africa.
Despite Spain's announcement last week about collaborating with Portugal and Morocco for a joint bid, the deadline for proposals has now passed, leaving the UK as the sole contender for the coveted hosting rights. Infantino confirmed that the USA will host the Women's World Cup in 2031, with the UK's bid for 2035 being the only other valid submission in the currently ongoing bidding process.
“Today I can confirm as part of the bidding process that we received one bid for 2031 and one valid bid for 2035,” stated Infantino during a UEFA congress held in Belgrade. He emphasized that these tournaments will significantly contribute to advancing women's football on a global scale.
Mark Bullingham, chief executive of the FA, expressed pride in being the only bidders for the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2035, stating that their commitment to delivering a high-quality event begins now. The formal submissions for the bid are expected to be finalized by the end of the year, with the final decision on hosts to be made during a FIFA congress in 2026.
Additionally, Infantino announced that the upcoming 2031 Women’s World Cup will see an increase in team participation, expanding from 32 to 48 teams. If the UK's hosting bid is approved, it will mark the second instance of a World Cup being hosted in the home nations, with the first being the men’s tournament in 1966 held in England. The anticipation surrounding the 2035 Women's World Cup is poised to enhance the visibility and growth of women's football across the globe.
