MrBeast Faces Legal Scrutiny Over Controversial Maya Ruins Video
The Mexican government considers action against the popular YouTube star for allegedly breaching site regulations during a recent video shoot at Chichén Itzá.
The popular YouTube star known as MrBeast, real name Jimmy Donaldson, is under fire from Mexican authorities following the release of his latest video that showcases his visit to the ancient Maya city of Chichén Itzá. This video, titled “I Explored 2,000 Year Old Ancient Temples,” has quickly attracted over 60 million views since being posted on Saturday, igniting both admiration and backlash.
The Mexican culture secretary has stated that her agency is contemplating legal action against the production company responsible for the video, suggesting that filming agreements may have been violated. The clip features MrBeast exploring various parts of the ruins, including nighttime visits and even scaling a pyramid, all while proclaiming, “I’m climbing these stairs like a dog.” Such actions could be seen as a breach of Mayan regulations, which prohibit climbing on pyramids and staying in the area after dark.
Chichén Itzá, recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage site, receives about two million visitors each year. The site is revered for its historical significance, comprising structures that date back over a millennium. Visitors have the privilege of exploring the ruins but must adhere to strict guidelines to preserve their integrity.
In a controversial move, MrBeast ends the video by promoting his Feastables brand, dubbing his candy as “the only Mayan-approved snack on the planet,” which further stirred discontent among critics. As the situation unfolds, the balance between the allure of influencer culture and the preservation of cultural heritage remains at the forefront of this debate.
