Deborra-Lee Furness Speaks on ‘Betrayal’ Following Divorce from Hugh Jackman

Australian actress Deborra-Lee Furness has shared her feelings regarding her divorce from Hugh Jackman, describing it as a journey of betrayal. After filing for divorce in May 2023 and announcing their separation in September, Furness emphasized self-discovery and personal integrity in her statement while Jackman remains silent on the matter.

Australian actress Deborra-Lee Furness has recently opened up about her emotional turmoil following her divorce from husband Hugh Jackman, describing the experience as one filled with 'betrayal.' Furness, now 69, issued a poignant statement to the media reflecting on the challenges of her personal life after filing for divorce from Jackman, 56, on May 23, 2023. The couple, who had been married for 27 years, publicly announced their separation in September.

In her statement, Furness expressed: “My compassion goes out to everyone who has traversed the traumatic journey of betrayal.” She framed her experience as a 'profound wound' that has deepened her understanding of herself. While acknowledging the pain, she also claimed to have gained "much knowledge and wisdom" from the breakdown of her marriage.

Furness emphasized that life's difficult circumstances often lead to greater self-awareness and liberation. "Sometimes the universe has to create arduous circumstances for us to walk through in order to find our way home, back to our true essence and the sovereignty of self-love,” she articulated. In her reflection, she highlighted the importance of living within one's own integrity and values for true freedom.

When the couple announced their separation, they released a joint statement which declared, “Our journey now is shifting, and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth... We undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love, and kindness.”

Furness and Jackman first met on the Australian television show Corelli in 1995, shortly after Jackman had completed his drama schooling. They married a year later and adopted two children during their marriage. Following Furness's heartfelt declaration, Jackman took to Instagram to share a light-hearted video of himself dancing to NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye,” signaling a different emotional response to the separation.
