Israel recovers the remains of a Thai hostage, Nattapong Pinta, over 20 months after he was captured during a Hamas attack.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the retrieval of Nattapong Pinta's body during a special operation in Rafah, southern Gaza, conducted on Friday. The 35-year-old was kidnapped while working to support his family in Thailand and is thought to have been killed relatively early in his captivity, according to military officials. Until this operation, uncertainty loomed over whether he was alive or deceased.
Earlier this week, two Israeli Americans were also recovered by the Israeli army from Gaza, further illustrating the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Pinta, a married father to a young son, was employed at Kibbutz Nir Oz when abducted by the Mujahideen Brigades, a militant faction involved in the region's violence.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched the recovery mission based on intelligence acquired from the interrogation of a captured militant. Nattapong's wife expressed her grief upon receiving the news of her husband’s recovery, sharing a heart-wrenching image of their son in tears.
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum described the recovery as a culmination of "20 terrible and agonizing months of devastating uncertainty," calling upon the Israeli government to negotiate with Hamas for the release of remaining hostages.
Nattapong was one of five Thai nationals taken captive during the attack on October 7, 2023, and is now understood to be the last Thai citizen involved in this incident. Previous to this, four others were freed during a ceasefire, all reported as alive.
In a parallel development, the IDF retrieved the remains of Judy and Gadi Haggai, an elderly couple who were also victims of the same kibbutz attack and held captive by the Mujahideen Brigades.
The conflict has resulted in catastrophic losses, with the Israeli military's response to the Hamas attack resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals and the capture of at least 251 others. Currently, 54 hostages remain unaccounted for, with 31 of them presumed dead. In Gaza, health authorities report over 54,677 fatalities as the war rages on, underlining the pressing need for resolutions to this ongoing humanitarian disaster.
