Outrage in India After Death of 10-Year-Old Rape Victim Amid Alleged Medical Delays
The tragic death of a 10-year-old rape victim in Bihar has ignited widespread anger and calls for accountability regarding medical negligence.
The recent death of a 10-year-old girl who was a victim of rape has triggered a wave of outrage across India, particularly in the eastern state of Bihar. The child passed away on Sunday morning after allegedly waiting for medical treatment for hours at the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). According to her uncle, the girl’s condition deteriorated as she was reportedly left waiting in an ambulance for about four hours on Saturday before being allowed into the hospital.
Hospital authorities at PMCH have dismissed these claims, labeling them as "baseless." However, the incident has drawn significant attention, prompting criticism from opposition leaders against the ruling coalition of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal United (JD-U) for their alleged mismanagement in handling the case. Government representatives, however, have refuted any suggestions of negligence.
The victim, who belonged to the marginalized Dalit community, was reportedly raped on May 26 by a man residing near her aunt's home in Muzaffarpur. After her disappearance while playing outside, her family discovered her with severe injuries, including knife wounds. She was initially treated at a local hospital and later transferred to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) for stabilization before moving to PMCH for necessary reconstructive surgery.
At SKMCH, Kumari Vibha, the superintendent, stated that the girl's condition had stabilized, leading to her referral to PMCH. Nevertheless, her uncle claimed they faced a protracted admission process, while officials from PMCH explained the rationale for her admission shifts due to the severity of her injuries. They contended that the child was brought in with advanced life support.
The heart-wrenching situation gained traction through a viral video that showed members of the opposition party, Congress, confronting hospital staff, resulting in protests across the state following the girl’s passing. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi spoke out against the hospital’s handling of the incident, demanding accountability from responsible authorities. The main opposition party, Rashtriya Janata Dal, criticized the prevailing chaos, alleging systemic issues including corruption and lack of resources in hospitals.
Despite the backlash, leaders from the BJP and JD(U) have characterized the tragic event as "unfortunate" without taking responsibility. The fatal incident has also surfaced concerns regarding the state of medical facilities in Bihar, with calls for improvement coming ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections. Recent reports highlighted severe deficiencies in government healthcare, including the functionality of ventilators and the doctor-to-patient ratio, shedding light on broader systemic issues affecting public health.
The situation remains under scrutiny as both national and regional bodies, including the National Human Rights Commission and the National Commission for Women, demand investigations into the hospital's operational procedures.
