A young boy’s fascination with planes turns to horror as he films a catastrophic Air India crash, leading to a traumatic aftermath for his family.**
The thrill of spotting airplanes turned to tragedy for 17-year-old Aryan Asari, who found himself at the center of one of India’s deadliest aviation disasters. Just last Thursday, while enjoying his time on the terrace of his father Maganbhai Asari's home in Ahmedabad, Aryan filmed the moments leading up to an Air India Dreamliner 787-8 crash that claimed 241 lives onboard and nearly 30 more on the ground.
For Aryan, who had always been captivated by the sound and majesty of flying planes, this was supposed to be a typical day. "I would run out to catch a glimpse of planes overhead," he shared in an interview with BBC Gujarati. However, that routine took a horrifying turn when he watched the aircraft descend rapidly, wobbling as it headed for disaster. "I saw the plane. It was going down and down, and then it crashed right before my eyes," he recounted.
The chilling video he captured has since become essential evidence for investigators probing the incident, gaining widespread media attention. Aryan's father disclosed that the family has been overwhelmed with interview requests, as Aryan, now at the heart of a horrific event, struggles to cope with the trauma. "My son is so scared that he has stopped using his phone," Mr. Asari explained.
Living in a neighborhood near the airport for only three years, Mr. Asari had hoped that his son would enjoy the thrill of aviation. This tragic event, however, has drastically altered Aryan's enthusiasm towards planes and has left him in a state of shock. He had been in Ahmedabad accompanying his sister for her police entrance exam, wanting to buy supplies and experience the city's bustling life for the first time.
After the devastating crash, Aryan’s emotional state worsened. "He sounded so frightened – ‘I saw it, papa, I saw it crash,’ he said, asking me what would happen to him," his father explained, emphasizing his son's state of panic. Despite efforts to shield Aryan from the media buzz, he ended up sharing the video with some friends, which quickly spread, intensifying the family's ordeal.
In the following days, reporters and neighbors crowded their home, complicating their attempt to heal. Under police inquiry, Aryan’s emotional distress prompted the family to send him back to their ancestral village, where he has resumed school but remains affected. "Every time his phone rings, he gets scared," Mr. Asari noted sadly.
While he believes Aryan will eventually heal, the hope that his son would share his old fascination with airplanes seems dim. This tragic incident not only highlights the fragility of life but also the impact such traumatic experiences can have, especially on youth.
