Empowering Future Mathematicians: Dr. Angela Tabiri's Quantum Mission for Girls in Ghana

Dr. Angela Tabiri, known as the "Maths Queen," is on a mission to mentor young African girls in mathematics, stemming from her own journey as a groundbreaking mathematician.

Dr. Angela Tabiri, the first African winner of The Big Internet Math Off competition, aims to change perceptions around women in mathematics while advocating for greater interest and involvement in quantum science among Ghana's youth.

Dr. Angela Tabiri, affectionately known as the "Maths Queen" in Ghana, has made headlines as the first African winner of The Big Internet Math Off, a competition designed to celebrate the most intriguing mathematicians across the globe. At 35, Dr. Tabiri’s passion for mathematical puzzles and quantum algebra not only sets her apart in her field but also fuels her desire to mentor aspiring young female mathematicians in Africa.

In this unique competition, 16 mathematicians were pitted against each other in a series of matches to earn the humorous title of "the world's most interesting mathematician." The event, which started in 2018 on The Aperiodical blog, highlights the importance of engaging public interest in mathematics. Dr. Tabiri's enthusiasm for quantum, or non-commutative, algebra shines at her research post with the Ghana branch of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), an institution committed to advancing post-graduate education and research in STEM fields across several African nations.

Beyond her academic role, Dr. Tabiri manages the Girls in Mathematical Sciences Programme, a mentoring initiative aimed at high school girls in Ghana. Launched by AIMS-Ghana in 2020, the program seeks to cultivate a pipeline of future female leaders in mathematical sciences and related industries. Dr. Tabiri emphasizes that while the enrollment of female and male students in math at the secondary school level appears equal, the numbers significantly dwindle at the university level due to societal perceptions that math is a male-dominated field.

Growing up in a bustling household in Ashaiman, a less affluent area near Accra, Dr. Tabiri pursued a path that was initially not her own, as her academic grades led her to mathematics and economics instead of business administration. This unexpected turn became a transformative experience for her, as she became captivated by numerical concepts. A pivotal moment arrived during her PhD studies in Scotland, where she watched the film "Hidden Figures," which showcased the contributions of black women mathematicians at NASA. Inspired by the film, particularly by Katherine Johnson’s work, Dr. Tabiri realized the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.

Amidst the achievements of Ghanaian women in mathematics, exemplified by Dr. Gloria Botchway’s historic PhD graduation in 2024, Dr. Tabiri aims to empower girls from disadvantaged backgrounds through her nonprofit, FemAfricMaths. Offering both in-person and online math lessons, she strives to create a supportive community for budding female mathematicians while posting inspirational content on social media featuring prominent female mathematicians worldwide.

Another aspect of Dr. Tabiri's vision lies in quantum science and technology; she played a role in advocating for 2025 to be recognized by the UN as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. Understanding the critical role mathematics plays in the development of quantum technologies, she highlights its potential to solve complex challenges across various fields, from healthcare to cybersecurity.

With Africa expected to have the largest workforce by 2040, Dr. Tabiri believes it is crucial to equip the younger generation with the necessary skills and knowledge. To this end, she is planning a "quantum road show" aimed at introducing children to quantum concepts at an earlier age. The initiative draws from her recent courses aimed at secondary school girls.

Additionally, Dr. Tabiri is collaborating with UNESCO to host a "Quantum Hackathon," bringing together post-graduate students from across the continent to tackle real-world issues using quantum techniques. As she continues to work towards bridging gaps in gender and math representation, Dr. Tabiri is dedicated to laying the groundwork for a new generation excited about both mathematics and scientific innovation.
