Reflecting on Five Years of Evolving Travel Post-Covid
A retrospective on how the pandemic reshaped travel habits and preferences since March 2020.
The journey through the Covid-19 pandemic has left an indelible mark on global travel, transforming how we explore destinations and interact with the world around us.
On March 11, 2020, when the World Health Organization officially declared Covid-19 a pandemic, an unprecedented wave of travel restrictions began. Within days, states implemented shutdowns and airports experienced an eerie stillness, with many places becoming ghost towns as nonessential travel was effectively halted. Key destinations barred entry for international arrivals, and cruise ships remained docked, as public health measures took precedence over wanderlust.
As vaccine distribution gathered momentum in early 2021, the travel landscape began shifting again, albeit cautiously. Face coverings became a non-negotiable part of boarding planes and entering transport hubs. However, as travelers grew weary of confinement and eager to reclaim experiences, the term "revenge travel" emerged, capturing the fervor for adventure as trips were planned in droves.
The resurgence in travel eventually led to an overwhelming influx of visitors in popular locales such as Venice, Barcelona, and Dubrovnik. With many destinations grappling with the consequences of overtourism, restrictions, including charges designed to curb visitor numbers, were instituted to balance the scales.
