FKA Twigs and Shia LaBeouf Settle Lawsuit Over Abuse Claims
Settlement ends lengthy legal battle as both parties seek personal peace
British singer-songwriter FKA Twigs, whose real name is Tahliah Debrett Barnett, and Hollywood actor Shia LaBeouf have officially settled the abuse lawsuit that began in 2020. In a joint announcement, the lawyers for both parties confirmed that the terms of the settlement would remain private, signifying an end to a tumultuous legal entanglement that had seen little progress over the years.
LaBeouf had previously denied many of the allegations raised against him but expressed remorse for the pain he had caused. The settlement follows a series of accusations by Twigs alleging physical, mental, and emotional abuse during their nine-month relationship, which ended in 2019 amidst claims of conflicting schedules.
Legal documents reviewed by Us Weekly indicate that Barnett has requested to dismiss all claims against LaBeouf with prejudice, meaning she cannot bring the same claims forth in the future. While a trial was initially scheduled for last year, it was postponed, adding to the prolongation of the case.
In their joint statement, both lawyers expressed a desire for one another's future happiness and success, noting, “We are committed to forging a constructive path forward.”
The two met in 2018 on the set of the film "Honey Boy," with Twigs later detailing incidents in which LaBeouf's behavior turned violent, including instances of being physically attacked during arguments. Speaking on Louis Theroux's BBC Radio 4 podcast in 2021, Twigs described feeling "scared and intimidated" throughout their relationship, revealing the lasting impact it had on her mental health, including PTSD.
LaBeouf has publicly acknowledged a history of personal abuse and has expressed regret for the harm he has caused, emphasizing his need to accept accountability.
FKA Twigs continues to thrive in her music career, recently releasing her latest album "Eusexua," which has earned her critical acclaim, including nominations for two Brit Awards. LaBeouf's recent work includes the crime drama "Henry Johnson," adding to his well-known roles in the "Transformers" franchise and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."
