Ukrainian boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk offers Donald Trump a week in his home to understand the impacts of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Unified heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk has made a compelling invitation to former U.S. President Donald Trump, suggesting he stay in his home for a week to fully grasp the gravity of the war in Ukraine. With Russia’s invasion commencing in 2022, Trump had previously stated that he could resolve the conflict within a day if re-elected but feels that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has played a role in the situation escalating.
Usyk, who dedicated his success to the Ukrainian people, voiced his offer during an interview, highlighting the ongoing bombings that occur near his residence. “I advise American President Donald Trump to come to Ukraine and live in my house for one week,” Usyk stated, “I will give him my house. Live please in Ukraine and watch what is going on every night. There are bombs and flights above my house. Bombs, rocket. Every night. It's enough.”
The invitation comes on the backdrop of ongoing tensions between Trump and Zelensky, notably after a contentious exchange during Zelensky's visit to the White House, where Trump criticized Ukraine's approach to U.S. support in peace efforts. When questioned about whether spending time in Ukraine would alter Trump's perspective on the war, Usyk expressed uncertainty, stating, “I don't know. Maybe he'll understand, maybe he won't.” He further conveyed his anguish over the humanitarian toll, mentioning the many civilians, including children, who are suffering.
Since the beginning of the war in 2022, Usyk has been vocally advocating for peace and the well-being of his nation, standing alongside fellow boxers like Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko. As he prepares for a rematch against Britain's Daniel Dubois on July 19 at Wembley Stadium, where he aims for legendary status as a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion, Usyk continues to be a prominent figure advocating for Ukraine's needs amid adversity.
