Sophie Hediger, who represented Switzerland in the 2022 Winter Olympics, tragically lost her life in a skiing accident.
Swiss snowboard cross star Sophie Hediger, who made her Olympic debut at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing, has died following an avalanche in Arosa, a ski resort in eastern Switzerland. The 26-year-old athlete was reportedly snowboarding with a companion on a closed black diamond slope when the incident occurred on Monday at 1:15 p.m., as per police reports.
A celebrated competitor on the international snowboard cross circuit, Hediger had recently participated in a World Cup race in Cervinia, Italy, just two weeks prior to her untimely death. Her impressive performance in January saw her finish second in a World Cup event in St. Moritz, Switzerland, marking her first podium finish. In February, she also secured a third-place finish in Gudauri, Georgia, further solidifying her status as a rising talent in the sport.
During the 2022 Winter Olympics, Hediger and her teammate Kalle Koblet finished seventh in the mixed team snowboard cross event, while also placing 19th in the women’s category. The pair competed in a discipline that features multiple snowboarders racing down an undulating course with challenging jumps.
Witnesses reported that after entering an off-limits area of the slope, Hediger was caught in the avalanche. Her companion immediately alerted emergency services and began searching for her. Rescue teams, including members of the Swiss Alpine Club and avalanche search dog specialists, responded quickly. Unfortunately, they were able to extricate Hediger from the snow by approximately 3:30 p.m. but were unable to revive her.
Walter Reusser, the chief executive of Swiss Ski, expressed deep sorrow in a statement, calling the incident a tragic loss for the Swiss skiing community and emphasizing the impact of her death on the Christmas season. Hediger, who was from Horgen, south of Zurich, had strong ties to the Arosa region, having spent much time there throughout her career. He emphasized the organization's commitment to honoring her memory during this difficult time for her family, friends, and fans.
