Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has taken decisive action by dismissing Shahram Dabiri from his position as vice president of parliamentary affairs, following public outcry over Dabiri's extravagant trip to Antarctica. The trip, taken during Nowruz, the Persian New Year, with Dabiri’s wife, was characterized by the president's office as “unjustifiable and unacceptable” in light of the country’s pressing economic issues.
A photo of the couple in front of the MV Plancius, a ship utilized for the cruise, sparked widespread anger on social media in Iran. Many citizens expressed concern that official travels like this exemplify a disconnect between the government and the struggles of ordinary Iranians, especially since Western sanctions continue to heavily impact the country's economy.
Pezeshkian noted that even if Dabiri had financed the trip himself, it still contradicted the values expected from those in positions of authority during times of hardship. He emphasized that such lavishness is “indefensible,” particularly when many Iranians are grappling with high unemployment rates—currently at 8.4%—and significant inflation, which stood at 29.5% in October 2024, according to the International Monetary Fund.
The Antarctic expedition, known for being a unique adventure often reserved for scientists and seasoned explorers, began at a cost of around $6,685, indicating that this was not a frugal choice by Dabiri. The outbreak of criticism from the public and members of Pezeshkian’s own supporter base contributed to the urgency of his dismissal.
Previously, Pezeshkian was elected on a platform that promised economic revitalization and an improvement in living conditions for Iranians, following the tenure of Ebrahim Raisi, who tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash. The president's recent actions signal a commitment to accountability within his administration as he navigates a nation facing profound economic challenges.
