Power Disruption at Cannes Film Festival: Impact and Response

A substantial power outage affected Cannes, but the film festival adapted quickly to ensure continuity.

The Cannes Film Festival encountered a significant power outage on Saturday, leaving approximately 160,000 homes in the region without electricity while event organizers managed to maintain their schedule.

On May 24, 2025, a substantial power outage struck the Cannes area in southeastern France, impacting the ongoing film festival and resulting in thousands losing power. According to France's electricity grid operator, RTE, the outage started around 10 a.m. As a consequence, power was cut to roughly 160,000 residences across Cannes and its vicinity. Emergency crews from RTE and the electrical distribution company were promptly deployed to restore power.

The cause of the outage remains unknown, but festival organizers swiftly announced that they had transitioned to an independent power source, ensuring that all planned events, including the crucial closing ceremony, would undergo without interruption. However, it was noted that screenings at one particular venue had to be briefly halted during the incident.

Despite the blackout's repercussions on local infrastructure, such as non-functioning traffic lights in certain sections of Cannes, state authorities from the Alpes-Maritimes region advised residents to exercise caution while navigating the area. The Palme d’Or, the festival's prestigious top award, and other honors were still set to be presented later that evening as planned.

The adaptability exhibited by the festival's organizers highlights the critical importance of contingency planning in large-scale events, even against unexpected disruptions.
