Marseille Battling Devastating Wildfire as Firefighters Mobilize
A fierce wildfire threatens the city of Marseille, France, prompting urgent mobilization of over a thousand firefighters to protect the region.
A massive wildfire is currently threatening Marseille, France’s second largest city, as a thousand firefighters work around the clock to combat the flames. Mayor Benoît Payan described the situation as an intense battle, likening the efforts of the marine fire battalion to "guerrilla warfare," emphasizing the high stakes involved.
Georges-François Leclerc, the prefect of the Bouches-du-Rhône area, called upon residents to stay indoors as firefighters “defend” the city from advancing flames. Although the situation is dynamic, Leclerc stated it was "under control," while at least 400 individuals have been evacuated to safety. Reports indicate that nine firefighters have sustained injuries during the ongoing efforts.
The blaze has damaged around 20 buildings, while hundreds of homes have been safeguarded thanks to the firefighters’ interventions. At the fire's height, flames were spreading at a staggering pace of 1.2 kilometers per minute, a result of strong winds, dry vegetation, and steep terrain, according to Payan's updates relayed by BFMTV.
President Emmanuel Macron, visiting the UK at the time, offered his support for the firefighting teams and urged residents to adhere to safety protocols. The Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau arrived in Marseille later, engaging with local emergency officials.
Marseille Provence airport partially resumed operations after being closed due to the fire, with airport president Julien Coffinier describing the circumstances as unprecedented in scale. Residents have been instructed to keep their doors and windows shut and to stay vigilant, with many feeling the severe strain of the ongoing crisis.
The wildfire reportedly ignited after a car caught fire on a nearby motorway, rapidly spreading across approximately 700 hectares (about 1,730 acres) of land. Strong winds expected to persist into the evening may further exacerbate the situation.
Residents, like Monique Baillard, described the environment created by the fire as “apocalyptic,” with a percentage of neighbors already evacuating. Online footage shows thick smoke rising ominously above the cityscape, alongside reports of another active wildfire near Narbonne, where over 2,000 hectares have burned.
Europe is experiencing widespread wildfires, with additional blazes reported in Catalonia, Spain, prompting tens of thousands of residents to remain indoors, alongside extensive firefighting operations. As western and southern Europe swelters under an intense summer heatwave, the threat of wildfires looms larger, compelling quick action from affected communities.
