In a stark display of sectarian unrest exacerbated by social media, violence broke out in Jaramana, a suburb of Damascus, leaving at least nine individuals dead and several others injured. The confrontations erupted overnight from Monday to Tuesday, according to the Syrian Interior Ministry and a prominent war monitoring group known as the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The cause of violence reportedly stemmed from an audio recording that circulated widely online, allegedly featuring a Druse cleric making derogatory remarks about the Prophet Muhammad. This claim was strongly refuted by the cleric and local Druse religious leaders. In response to public outrage, the Syrian Interior Ministry found no evidence implicating the cleric and urged for calm.

Tensions escalated as armed groups, believed to be incited by the audio clip, began to position themselves around Jaramana, leading to gunfire and shelling in the area. The Syrian Observatory documented heavy gun battles, highlighting that 17 additional people were also injured during the clashes. Demonstrations sparked across various cities as protestors invoked further violence against the Druse community.
