Severe Flooding Strikes Lanzarote Amidst Torrential Rainfall
Tourist hotspot Lanzarote faces chaos as thunderstorms lead to widespread flooding and state of emergency.
Lanzarote has experienced severe flooding after heavy rain fell rapidly over the weekend, causing considerable disruption. In a matter of two hours, 6 cm (2.4 inches) of rain drenched the popular Canary Island, prompting local authorities to declare a state of emergency. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, and the emergency status was lifted by Sunday morning.
Emergency services responders, notably from the island’s capital, Arrecife, and tourist locality, Costa Teguise, faced an influx of calls, totaling around 300 incidents overnight. Enrique Espinosa, head of Lanzarote's emergency services, reported that many homes were flooded, with impacted areas left with significant amounts of mud.
Social media platforms are abuzz with dramatic videos illustrating the force of the floods, including scenes of torrent-like waters surging beneath bridges and trapping vehicles on inundated roads.
The torrential rain has been attributed to the aftermath of Storm Olivier, which had recently traversed the Canary Islands along with parts of mainland Spain and Portugal, leading to various weather advisory alerts. As the situation develops, Spain’s meteorological service has cautioned citizens about further storm risks and potential rain across multiple regions through Tuesday.
