Tragic Accident Claims Diogo Jota's Life: Speeding Suspected
The police investigation into the fatal crash involving footballer Diogo Jota suggests he was likely speeding before the accident.
An ongoing investigation by the Guardia Civil in Spain has revealed that evidence points to Portuguese football star Diogo Jota likely driving his Lamborghini at excessive speeds prior to a catastrophic crash that resulted in his death. The 28-year-old Liverpool FC forward was traveling with his 25-year-old brother, André Silva, when the accident occurred early Thursday morning on the A52 motorway in the Zamora region, following a suspected tyre blowout.
The police reported that the Lamborghini was attempting to overtake another vehicle before veering off the road and igniting into flames. An analysis of tyre marks left on the motorway led authorities to conclude that Jota was the driver. “Everything also points to a possible excessive speed beyond the speed limit of the road,” stated the local traffic police in Zamora.
The investigation was made particularly challenging due to the severe fire that largely consumed the vehicle, complicating forensic examinations. Authorities have been meticulously preparing their findings for court.
The horrific incident struck just days after Jota celebrated his marriage to Rute Cardoso in Portugal. The couple had three children together. The brothers were en route to Santander, enabling Jota to join Liverpool for pre-season training.
Their funeral took place over the weekend in their hometown of Gondomar, near Porto. Despite initial whispers regarding road conditions contributing to the accident, police labeled the site as a safe driving area, indicating that the pavement was in fact conducive to speeds exceeding 120km/h (75mph). As investigative measures continue, the football community mourns the loss of a promising talent and beloved family man.
