Four fatalities and numerous injuries reported as Kyiv faces a fresh wave of drone and missile attacks from Russia.
In early Friday morning, Russian military launched a large-scale assault on various locations in Ukraine, prominently the capital city, Kyiv. Local authorities confirmed that four people were killed, and at least 20 others were injured, with Kyiv's mayor, Vitaliy Klitschko, emphasizing the dire situation faced by emergency responders. Among the deceased were three rescue workers who were performing their duties during the heightened conflict, as reported by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS).
"Their courage is commendable," DSNS commented, highlighting that additional nine rescue workers were hurt, with several sustaining severe injuries as medical professionals rushed to their aid. As the attacks unfolded, air raid alerts were activated in Kyiv as well as in the regions of Kharkiv, Sumy, and Luhansk, exacerbating the chaos.
Kyiv's transport infrastructure also suffered severe impacts as shelling damaged the metro tracks, leading to disruptions in services. Outside the capital, officials in Ternopil reported the most extensive air attacks to date on their region, with five people injured and substantial damage inflicted on schools and residential areas.
In Lutsk, five others were counted among the injured following the strikes, which utilized a combination of drones and missiles. According to Mayor Ihor Polishchuk, the onslaught included an estimated 15 drones and six missiles.
Notably, Russia's defense ministry claimed it had successfully intercepted a number of Ukrainian drone attacks aimed at its territory, reporting the downing of 174 drones overnight in different regions, including occupied Crimea, along with preventing any Neptune anti-ship missiles from reaching their targets over the Black Sea.
This latest Russian offensive follows a significant Ukrainian drone strike that successfully targeted over 40 Russian warplanes at multiple military installations, as stated by President Volodymyr Zelensky. He noted that 117 drones were employed in what is referred to as the "Spider's Web" operation, aiming to disrupt Russia's strategic missile capabilities.
Moscow has hinted at responding more assertively to Ukraine's recent drone attacks, further escalating the ongoing hostilities and raising concerns about an intensification of violence in the region.
