Russia has launched a devastating missile and drone attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, resulting in at least 10 confirmed deaths and over 100 injuries. As reported by officials, a drone crashed into an apartment complex, obliterating several flats, while the assault included a staggering 440 drones and 32 missiles. Initially believed to have resulted in 15 fatalities, the number was later adjusted to 10, with additional casualties recorded in Odesa, where two more lives were lost.

The extensive attack, described by President Volodymyr Zelensky as "one of the most terrifying strikes," ranks among the most significant since the outset of Russia's renewed aggression against Ukraine. The Russian defence ministry claimed its strikes focused on targeting Ukraine's military-industrial capabilities, asserting that all objectives had been fulfilled.

The extensive aerial bombardment persisted for over nine hours, forcing residents to seek refuge in underground shelters from late evening until daylight. A nine-storey apartment building in the Solomyanskyi district was severely damaged by a ballistic missile, with the entrance collapsing and hopes of finding survivors dwindling. The city's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, reported the destruction of more than 40 apartments and the likelihood of additional casualties trapped beneath debris.

Eyewitness reports highlighted the chaos, with explosions resonating through the city at the night’s peak and machine gun fire from Ukrainian air defence units attempting to intercept drones. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko noted widespread damage to various infrastructures, including residential, critical, and educational facilities, as rescue operations continued into the afternoon.

In the wake of the strikes, President Zelensky, attending the G7 summit in Canada, condemned the carnage as "pure terrorism," criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin for sustaining his war efforts. As Kyiv braces for future attacks, Western allies are deliberating additional sanctions against Russia to maintain pressure in light of the ongoing conflict.

With both Kyiv and Odesa now grievously affected, the frequency and intensity of drone assaults denote a perilous evolution in warfare tactics, sparking fears of further escalations.
