Rising Tensions: Kashmir Under Siege as India and Pakistan Clash
As conflict escalates, fears grow among ordinary citizens in India, particularly in regions under bombardment in Kashmir.
The current situation in Kashmir is dire, marked by an increase in hostilities between India and Pakistan. As of May 9, 2025, the conflict has evolved dramatically with cross-border artillery shelling that has left numerous casualties and a climate of fear pervasive throughout the region.
Residents of Poonch, located near the “line of control,” have reported a devastating toll from the Pakistani bombardment, with recent reports noting that at least thirteen individuals have lost their lives since India initiated Operation Sindoor—an operation intended to retaliate against a terrorist attack that occurred on April 22. “The artillery shelling in Poonch is unprecedented,” recounted Narinder Singh, a retired school principal. He emphasized that during past conflicts, such as the war in 1971, this level of sustained shelling was not seen.
The public’s daily life has been upended as businesses close and civilians stay indoors. In this atmosphere of dread, only essential services remain operational, leaving many to tiptoe through the dangers of life amidst warfare. Fear has now become a constant companion for Poonch locals, with Mr. Singh noting the community's adaptations to the ongoing threat: residents are becoming more cautious and have identified safer locations to shelter from the attacks.
Despite the heightened danger, citizens maintain hope for peace, yet the uncertainty looms large over Kashmir and beyond, as parts of India, including Jaisalmer and Bhuj, could also fall within the strike range of Pakistani drones and missiles. In this fraught environment, the boundaries of security and safety keep shifting as both nations seem poised for a serious escalation in hostilities.
