When Ms. Brösche and Mr. Sielaff arrived at the bustling San Ysidro border crossing between San Diego and Tijuana, they were met with unexpected challenges. While tourists from most European nations typically enjoy visa-free entry to the U.S. for brief visits, both were denied access and subsequently detained under precarious conditions. Mr. Sielaff spent 16 days in detention, while Ms. Brösche endured a harrowing 46 days, which included nine days in solitary confinement, according to their personal accounts and those of concerned friends.
