Peruvian Woman Detained for Attempted Drug Smuggling in Bali
A 42-year-old woman faces serious charges after attempting to bring cocaine and ecstasy into Bali, hidden within personal items.
In a shocking turn of events, a 42-year-old woman from Peru has been arrested in Bali, Indonesia, for allegedly attempting to smuggle narcotics valued at around $70,000 (£52,000). Authorities have reported that she concealed a significant amount of cocaine and ecstasy within her personal items, specifically in her underwear and a sex toy. The individual, identified only by the initials N.S., was apprehended by customs officials who noticed her suspicious behavior at the airport.
According to Radiant, the director of Bali's narcotics unit, the woman had hidden 1.4 kg (3.1 lbs) of cocaine and 43 ecstasy pills within six plastic packets wrapped in black duct tape, which were placed inside a green bra and also in black underwear. In a further twist, one of the drugs was found inside a sex toy that she had inserted into her body, leading to her immediate arrest after the customs alert.
Upon investigation, N.S. disclosed that she had been promised $19,000 to carry out the smuggling operation after connecting with a contact from the dark web earlier this year. Her journey to Bali included a flight from Barcelona, Spain, with a layover in Doha, culminating in her arrival on August 12.
Indonesia is notoriously strict regarding drug-related offenses, often imposing severe penalties that can include the death penalty for trafficking cases. Although there has been a moratorium on executions since 2017, the judicial system's approach remains daunting for alleged drug offenders. This incident follows recent cases where individuals, including three British nationals found guilty of smuggling cocaine disguised as confectionery, narrowly averted execution, further underscoring the country's stringent drug laws.
